Treehouse Staff & Customers 2011 Poll Results

If you have been a regular customer at Treehouse Records over the past decade, you have likely seen our staff members' "Top 10 of the Year" lists appearing in the store sometime in December and taken down sometime in March.

This year, I wanted to see lists from our friends and regular customers as well. Once I started collecting a few, I decided to tally the votes in our first ever Treehouse Staff & Customers Year-End Poll. Each first place vote would receive 10 points, each tenth place vote would get one point, and so on. The results would be ranked by total points, with the amount of votes cast being a tie-breaker. I solicited lists from all friends and customers via our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as by mentioning it to people at the store. 57 ballots were cast, which we think is pretty damn impressive for something that developed so quickly, and we would like to thank all of our participants. (As for the rest of you, you can feel free to leave your lists and other comments here, but these results are final for 2011.)

There were three goals in mind with this poll:
  1. Hopefully we can sell some records. Brick and mortar record stores are still having a tough go of it, so we have to do what we can to move product. I figure if a few people who were not previously aware of someone like Kurt Vile, M83, or Shabazz Palaces see this list and the amount of votes each received, they might be inclined to check 'em out. Likewise, perhaps someone wondering to themselves, "Do I really need another PJ Harvey or Wilco record?" may see this and decide "Yes, I guess I do."
  2. I wanted to find a few things that Treehouse had perhaps neglected during the year. If there's a title that a few of our customers have been loving but we hadn't been aware of it, it's probably a good idea to bring a couple copies into stock.
  3. I just thought it would be fun.
The rules were simple: lists should be made of new full-length albums that were given their first release during the 2011 calendar year. No reissues, archival recordings, singles or EPs, and nothing released prior to 2011.

Inevitably some of the lists contained prohibited titles. With those, I played it by ear. I deleted most reissues and pre-2011 titles from the final results, but left them intact on the individual customer lists that were published. I did the same with singles, but I left most EPs on the results. I also allowed digital-only releases for this year, though we may request they be left off the lists in the future, since they are not items we can stock at the store. Finally there were a couple lists that came in at the deadline and were marked "no particular order." For those, I just gave everything on the list five points.

Okay, nerdy details are done. Onward with the results! Thanks for reading this far, and thank you so much for your continued support of Treehouse Records.
